Join The Bronx Concert Singers (BCS) and music director Robert René Galván on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 4:30 pm for their 34th Annual Holiday Concert at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Parkchester, Bronx, NY. This Yuletide program features Vivaldi's Magnificat, seasonal favorites, works by Scarlatti, Villa-Lobos and others performed by the BCS chorus, with keyboardist Tamara Cashour, professional soloists and chamber orchestra.
The holiday season is a time for both joyous celebration and quiet reflection. Maestro Galván weaves these themes into an inspiring program of classical music, multi-cultural sacred songs, and Christmas carols featuring the music of celebrated Baroque era composer Antonio Vivaldi. Works to be performed are Vivaldi's Magnificat, RV 610, a stirring setting of Mary's hymn of praise (from Luke 1:46-55); Concerto for Four Violins, movement I, Allegro, RV 580 and Concerto for Two Oboes, movement III, Largo, RV 535. Additional works include Alessandro Scarlatti's jubilant "Exultate Deo," and his idyllic Pastorale: "Tocco la prima sorte a voi, pastori," from Christmas Cantata.
An integral part of this diverse holiday concert is the incorporation of rhythms and flavors from African American, Caribbean and Latin American music. Selections include Ariel Ramirez's rousing "Gloria," from his Spanish folk Mass, Misa Criolla; Heitor Villa-Lobos' moving "Ave Maria," Roland Carter's passionate arrangement of the spiritual "Go Tell it on The Mountain" and American composer Kirby Shaw's energetic "Jamaican Noel." Also, audience members can raise their voices in song along with the chorus as Maestro Galván leads us all in a festive Christmas carol sing-along.
Soloists for the performance are: Malaika Alvaro and Beverly McDew, soprano; Alexandra Fetner, mezzo soprano; Dale Smith and Anthony Cinelli, tenor and Dalton Taylor, bass.
Tickets are available in advance and at the door from BCS: General admission is $20 / two for $35, seniors and students with valid ID, $15 and children through high school, $5. Tickets may also be charged through Brown Paper Tickets.
BCS's 34th Annual Holiday Concert is made possible with public funds from the Bronx Council on the Arts through the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, and through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs' Greater New York Arts Development Fund Program, and the support of local businesses, organizations and individuals who appreciate the arts.
