Chuckanut Radio Hour with Special Guest William Dietrich, The Emerald Storm
The Chuckanut Radio Hour is a radio variety show that began in January 2007. Each Chuckanut Radio Hour features a guest author and includes guest musicians, performance poet Kevin Murphy, Cascadia Weekly columnist Alan Rhodes, an episode of "The Bellingham Bean" serial radio comedy, and some groaner jokes by hosts Chuck & Dee Robinson and announcer Rich Donelly. The Chuckanut Radio Hour's first guest was Erik Larson and has since included Elizabeth George, J.A. Jance, Sherman Alexie, Tom Robbins and Garrison Keillor, among many others. The Radio Hour airs every Saturday evening at 6pm and Sunday at 9pm on KMRE 102.3FM. This month's special guest is William Dietrich for his new book The Emerald Storm: An Ethan Gage Adventure. In The Emerald Storm the intriguing Ethan Gage, who USA Today has called "a refreshing reminder of what it was to be a neo-American, full of spirit and hungry for adventure," tries to sell a stolen emerald which the French government believes is part of a much larger and long-lost treasure that could enable it to conquer Britain. In Paris, Gage is tortured by a renegade former French police officer and though he escapes, his son is kidnapped. To rescue young Harry, Gage and his wife Astiza must journey to embattled Caribbean Islands which in 1803 are hellholes of disease and unrest.
Dietrich elegantly integrates Gage's thrilling adventure with history by embedding real historical figures such as Napoleon, British glider inventor George Cayley, and the black slave revolutionary Touissant L'Ouverture into the plot. As Publisher's Weekly has noted, "Dietrich combines a likable hero surrounded by a cast of fascinating historical characters." As in previous books in the series, "riveting battle scenes, scantily clad womenreckless heroism, hairsbreadth escapes and undaunted courage" are part of what readers will find fascinating in The Emerald Storm. Ethan is again embroiled with the Napoleonic tumult of ideals, opportunism, inventions, romance, glory, and havoc that gave rise to the modern world. The series, which ranges from the sands of Egypt to the frontiers of North America, offers both thrilling mysteries and an increasingly ambitious global portrait of a crucial and colorful era.
William Dietrich is the author of ten novels, including the historical thriller series featuring the irrepressible American expatriate Ethan Gage: Napoleon's Pyramids,The Rosetta Key, The Dakota Cipher, and The Barbary Pirates. Dietrich is also a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, historian and naturalist. A winner of the PNBA Award, he lives in Washington State.
