REvisited/REnewed
Crafted by Artistic Directors Brenna Pierson-Tucker and Christopher Tucker, Esoteric Dance Project presents REvisited/Renewed; exploring three signature selections of repertoire from over five years of programming presented alongside a thought-provoking work-in-progress. This performance weekend showcases four of the unique voices that EDP has developed over the course of its five seasons ranging from an intimate glimpse into an interwoven relationship to a circling downward spiral of a hording psyche. The evening promises to continue the smart and choreographically athletic movement for which Esoteric Dance Project has become known. REvisited/REnewed runs Friday-Saturday at 7:30 pm and Sunday at 7:00 pm, December 4th-6th, 2015. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Unsilenced Thoughts of Two Women explores women's silent burdens and the comfort and relief that one can be felt with the simple gesture of a listening audience. The work combines a trance-like instrumental piece of Tom Waits and the rhythmic spoken word of Ani Diffranco's poetry. Two women on separate paths with separate reflections collide and begin to share the weight of their inner voices through the help of an open and empathetic ear. They move both separately and together in effortless harmony while finding and embracing brief moments of partnered support. Then they break into two uniquely individual spoken word solos that, along with their movement, allow for their inner thoughts and contemplations to be poured out.
Untitled (premiere) is the first phase of a project that delves into the varied experiences and stages in the pervasive battle with cancer. Drawing from both a personal familiarity as well as testimonials from others that have been effected, Christopher Tucker examines the private and shared consequences that result and the commonalities that bind all cases. In this excerpt, the protagonist showcases the beginning of the process that involves the staggering moment of discovery and the whirlwind wash of white coats that ensues during diagnosis.
iloveyouihateyou is a physically-demanding duet that touches the emotional extremities of an interwoven relationship. The work illuminates the idea of one person able to incite the strongest emotions (both positive and negative) from a loved one due to a sense of safeness. Through the use of, at times unpleasant to the eye, seemingly abusive physical partnering, the pair approaches the limits of comfortability within a relationship.
Using an oscillating control between the group of six and the soloist, Keepsake showcases the damaging effects that a hoarding personality can have on a social group. This is emphasized in the costuming of the soloist: a complete wardrobe covered in pockets for her to amass the relationships and emotions of those around her. The work follows one person's journey through the beginning stages of the possessive mentality, past the abusive moments that push people away to a time of catharsis and the steps it takes it to move forward and reconcile.
