Event
Southerland/Gillet, Army of Shadows, Yom/Smith
Our aim for the May feature: Present a marvelous jazz concert, unlike anything you've been getting your ears wet with in Austin, this year. We are tickled plum pink! to present: Mark Southerland (reeds & horns) from Kansas City! Helen Gillet (cello) from New Orleans!
Mark Southerland is well known as a musician and performance artist of more than two decades. Employing a delightful variety of techniques contrived to unbind your notions of jazz, he's clever, playful, and intense. Inviting him to Austin, at last, is an absolute thrill.
Helen Gillet is a dazzling, adventuresome cellist of rare talent. She seems endlessly involved in diverse, fascinating settings for cello and voice. We are extremely lucky to be hosting her in this setting with Mark Southerland.
We are so proud to invite this pair of artists to Austin for a visit!
Army of Shadows is the improv duo created by Brad Andrew + Fumihito Sugawara. Brad Andrew is a tenor saxophonist who was born in New Jersey. He cheerfully resides in Austin and actively digs the scene. Fumihito Sugawara is a musician and composer with an unconventional, yet winsome approach to building narratives with music. He hails from Hiroshima, Japan.
Also playing will be Austin composer and musician Carl Smith with Flutist/composer Michelle Yom visiting from Houston before she moves to Berlin!
