TALLIS SCHOLARS SUMMER SCHOOL Opening Concert
The annual Tallis Scholars Summer School kicks off with a concert of Flemish polyphony in which the Tudor Choir is directed by Peter Phillips and joined by the TSSS tutors. The program culminates with Josquin Desprez' brilliant 24-voice canon, Qui habitat. ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Tallis Scholars director Peter Phillips writes: "If it is your instinctive habit to move forward through time, and to travel from colder climes to warmer as you go, this program will disconcert you. We begin in Spain at the very end of the 16th century and travel slowly north to Flanders nearly a hundred years earlier. Guerrero and de Monte were leading figures in the courts of Spain and Prague respectively during the High Renaissance; Crecquillon and Gombert were Flemish composers of the mid-century; and Josquin was by all accounts the most important Flemish composer of any period, though he died in 1521. Much of this program is scored for eight voices, but it culminates in perhaps the grandest piece of music imaginablea 24-voice canon in which four melodies are shared between the four groupings of six voices each. So we finish with the man who influenced them all."
The choir of 24 singers will include three current and former members of the Tallis Scholars, who, with Peter Phillips, will serve as tutors during the weeklong course. The purpose of the opening concert is to showcase Mr. Phillips and the tutors and to set the standard for singing that all course participants will work to achieve. The efforts of course participants will be featured in the course gala concert on Friday, July 27, also at. St. James Cathedral.
