Comedy Returns to El Rio! (Mon, May 14)
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig, began her stand up comedy career 23 years ago at El Rio's then weekly comedy night in San Francisco's Mission District. In commemoration of her 20th year in comedy, in 2009 she launched a monthly comedy show, Comedy Returns to El Rio! the second Monday of the month at the club that first put her onstage. The show is now in its 4th year.
Geduldig strives to produce multicultural, inclusive comedy shows with the variety of shows she produces each year (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, Funny Girlz). The May 14th El Rio show features: headliner Shazia Mirza from London, Marga Gomez, Dan St. Paul, Jeff Applebaum, and Lisa Geduldig.
SHAZIA MIRZA, a trained biochemist who was born in England to Pakistani immigrant parents and raised in a strict Muslim environment, reluctantly pursued a career as a science teacher while secretly honing her writing, acting, and comedy skills part-time at drama school and with late-night gigs across the UK. Oblivious to Shazia's clandestine commitment to her art, it took an appearance on the BBC celebrity game show Have I Got News For You? for friends and family to realize the extent of her ambitions. Shazia performs all over the world: she tours throughout the US and Europe and has performed in such hot spots as Kosovo and Dubai. She has been profiled on 60 Minutes and in The New York Times and has appeared on Last Comic Standing. As a writer, Shazia has written columns in The New Statesman (for which she won "Columnist of the Year 2008" at the prestigious Periodical Publishers Association Awards), The Guardian (UK), and numerous other publications. In 2009, Shazia was listed on the inaugural Muslim Women's Power List as one of the 20 most successful Muslim women in the UK. She has performed at two Kung Pao productions: Funny Girlz: A Smorgasbord of Women Comedians and A Muslim, A Mormon, and A Jew Walk into A Bar: The Comedy of Religion. http://www.shazia-mirza.com
MARGA GOMEZ is a San Francisco based, nationally acclaimed touring comedian, writer and performer. She was named "Best Comedian 2012" by The Bay Area Reporter and is a triple winner of SF Bay Guardian's "Best Comedian" award. Marga's high energy, proudly Latina, openly gay, slightly dorky, tragically sexy, laugh getting act has landed her on HBO's Comic Relief, Showtime's Latino Laugh Festival, and LOGO's One Night Stand Up. Marga is also the author/performer of nine solo plays, which have been produced nationally, internationally, and Off-Broadway. Her latest solo show Not Getting Any Younger is running at the Marsh Berkeley through May 19th. http://www.margagomez.com
DAN ST PAUL, after a 7-year stint headlining SF clubs in the comedy duo Murphy-St.Paul, launched out on his own with a solo act that landed him in the finals of The SF Comedy Competition. Having grown up in San Francisco's Mission District, Dan moved to LA and appeared on several episodes of An Evening at the Improv, numerous shows on VH-1, MTV, and Comedy Central. He has opened for Jerry Seinfeld, Natalie Cole, Smokey Robinson, and others. He appeared in the movie "Flubber" with Robin Williams and signed a recording deal with MCA records. His CD, "Natural and Good for You" contains one the most requested comedy pieces on radio, "The First Baseball Game." He also is the star of his own one-man play, "Outer Mission, Middle Class - The Comic Diary of an Immigrant's Son." Corporate clients include Hewlett Packard, National Semiconductor, IBM, Intel, Nations Bank, Philips Magnavox, Chevron, Blue Cross, and many, many more. Armed with a Bachelors Degree in Italian from UC Berkeley, a teaching credential from San Francisco State, and a Masters Degree in special education, the majority of Dan's material comes from being a suburban husband and father and dealing with the frustrations of everyday life. www.danstpaul.com
JEFF APPLEBAUM's comedy examines being the only white kid on his Little League team in Queens, having a Chinese wife who orders from take-out menus in fluent Mandarin, and raising a teenage son who calls himself Jewnese because he says it sounds better than Chine-ish. Jeff recently made his national TV debut on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, has been seen on Comedy.TV, Byron Allen's nationally syndicated program, and has opened for comic legends including Robert Klein, Richard Lewis, and Robin Williams. Jeff was cast by Sandy Hackett, the late Buddy Hackett's son, to play the principal role of Joey Bishop in the long-running touring musical tribute The Rat Pack is Back. He also appears in the film, The Pursuit of Happyness, starring Will Smith. Prior to comedy, Jeff worked as an engineer, using his two degrees from MIT. He lives with his wife and three children in Silicon Valley. http://www.JeffApplebaum.com
