THE STORY OF LOVERS ROCK
Sunday, April 29 @ 4:30PM
Associated with a romantic, swoony kind of British reggae that was pointedly apolitical, Lovers Rock, like Motown in America, eventually became a genre onto itself, a kind of music that was characterized by an emphasis on the personal, the intimate. Blossoming in Britain in the 1970s, Lovers Rock was a genre that spoke of the persecution of the Caribbean immigrants, who were often banned from pubs and in danger of being beaten or framed for crimes both petty and severe. The Story of Lovers Rock is a loving tribute to this music genre, its roots and its influence on British society and beyond. UK, 2011, 96mins, documentary, English, Menelik Shabazz, dir.
