The First Rasta
THE FIRST RASTA
Sunday, April 29, 2012 @ 6:30PM
Directed by Music journalist Helene Lee, The First Rasta traces the life and contribution of Leonard "Gong" Howell (1893- 1981) to the Rasta movement. In the early 1900's, he traveled the world as a sailor and studied many ideas - Bolshevism, Gandhi, Anarchism, Garveyism and psychoanalysis, among others until he returned to Jamaica to establish Pinnacle, the first Rasta community. The First Rasta is a movie about Leonard Howell, but it is also an excellent documentary about the roots of reggae. The Soundtrack includes reggae's seminal songs and characters from the pioneer producer Bunny Lee to Max Romeo and from The Abyssinians' Satta Massagana to Count Ossie's drums.France/Jamaica, 2011, 90 min, Doc, English, Hélène Lee, dir.
