Widowers' Houses
Bernard Shaw's first play. The idealistic young Harry Trench is making a tour down the Rhine, stopping at historic places to see the sights. He meets Blanche, the girl of his dreams, at a hotel in Remagen and asks her father, the formidable Sartorius, for permission to court her. After checking Trench's aristocratic background, Sartorius agrees. The romance goes well until, back in London, Harry discovers, from Sartorius's aptly named factotum, Lickcheese, that Blanche's dowry is derived from exploiting the desperately poor tenants of her father's tenement houses. Harry is forced to choose between love and honor.
