Nativity! The Musical 2015
NATIVITY: THE MUSICAL! IS TRUMPING ALL THE OTHER NATIVITY CHURCH PAGEANTS IN 11th ANNUAL PRODUCTION Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump meet at the manger. Will they get religion?
Beloved Holiday Show, Running December 17-20, "blends 'classic' with 'out there'" (The Burbank Leader)
Nativity: The Musical! is the beloved Burbank holiday production that peppers its telling of the Christmas story with characters ripped from today's headlines and songs from the Billboard Hot 100 and the Great White Way. "NTM!" celebrates its 11th zany year running the "Greatest Story Ever Told" through a blender on frappe. This year's editionwhich will run December 17 through 20will introduce Christmas miracles and revisit songs and characters that have become for many a Christmas tradition. Greg and Melissa Baldwincreators of the original musical (which features a cast of 90 and counting!)certainly have a colorful history to draw from. In addition to Trump and Hillarychances are good that Broadway's Alexander Hamilton will put in an appearance and the Mother of Jesus just might meet the Mother of Dragons. Tickets are available now at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/2433045.
"It's a pretty safe bet there's not another church on the planet that would have a Magic 8-Ball foretelling the Christ child's birth, the stable run by a couple of cos players, the star of Bethlehem presented as a glamorous Hollywood starlet, or Caesar Augustus headlining a lounge act complete with Carmen Miranda-inspired showgirls at (where else) Caesar's Palace," said The Burbank Leader's David Laurell. "Add to that a quartet of doorbell-ringing Mormons as the Magi, and Caesar's young assistant, 'Little Caesar,' arriving at the stable with a pizza and asking: 'Who ordered the double pepperoni?' and you get an idea why a running gag of each year's performance includes cherubim shaking their little haloed-heads while opining: 'This show gets weirder and weirder every year!'"
This year, Joseph will be played by Matt Bond, a senior at Burroughs High School, where he has been an active member of the Drama department and the Vocal Music Association for all four years. Mary will be played Madison Herbold and Rebekah Maynes, a junior at Burbank High School. Each will have three performances. Maynes, a junior at Burbank High School who is a member of the In Sync choir and very involved in the school's drama productions, has been in Nativity since it debuted in 2004, will perform on Thursday Night, Friday Night and the Saturday Matinee. Herbold, a senior at Santa Susana High School in Simi Valley where she is active in the school's visual arts program, will perform on Saturday Night, Sunday Matinee and Sunday Night.
"Enjoy the lighter side of Nativity," urged Holly J. Andres of the Los Angeles Daily News. Greg Simay of BurbankNBeyond urged readers to put Nativity: The Musical! on their "list of feel-good holiday activities. Each year the skits and songs are freshly conceived...It's as if Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney had looked at each other and said, 'Let's put on a show! About Christmas!'"
