Last of the Knotts
Selected as one of Hollywood Fringe Festival's "Best of the Fest" 2011, the "Last of the Knotts" is a semi-autobiographical solo show from poet/ performer Doug Knott. In it, Knott's character - a carefree LA hipster - agonizes over whether or not to become a father after putting up with a lifetime of pain from his own dad, an abusive Florida judge. A well-known poet and stage performer, Knott has produced and emceed a hit cult variety show, had his own nightclub, toured the country as part of the performance group the Carma Bums, and was named winner of the revived TV Gong Show. The L.A. TIMES's recent review said "Raw, fluid and eloquently quirky... unsparingly honest... this monologuist virtually defines the form." The show "zigzags between twisted hilarity and arresting gravitas... fascinating... a tickling, touching portrait of considerable reach and impact."
The L.A. WEEKLY gave the show a "GO" (special selection), calling it "fascinatingly complex and morally nuanced.... Knott addresses the audience as if they're honored guests in his home - a straightforward approach that allows the dark eddies and disturbing undercurrents to show through with unexpected pathos."
In the play, Doug has promised himself and his abusive old man to be the "Last of the Knotts" until... he falls in love with a beautiful woman with a pet boa constrictor... and "one of his sperm clings to a lifeboat inside her." The show, too, is pregnant with laughs, squirms and the comic and painful truth of life!
