OYA by d'bi.young anitafrika Book Launch
Welcome to the launch of the 3rd collection of writings by d'bi.young anitafrika. d'bi. will be celebrating with her new band 'dbi333' at Lula Lounge. Don't Miss It!!!
OYA is d'bi.young anitafrika's 3rd collection of writing. The book traverses current socio-political world realities from a very intimate and personal lens. Inspired by and dedicated to Oya, Orisha Goddess of Transformation and Defender of Womxn, anitafrika continues to ask potent questions and insists that r/evolutionary change is an ongoing personal practice that mushrooms into to institutional change.
Globally reknowned as a poet, theatre practitioner, educator, and scholartist, d'bi.young anitafrika is an internationally celebrated Jamaican-dancehall-diva-wombanist-warrior-chanting-conscious-fyah on the mic. Her lyricism stems from the highly socio-political genre of dub poetry fused with dancehall reggae, hiphop, punk rock, blues and performance art; producing a pepperpot of theatricality that crosses cultural boundaries, reconfigures social norms and inspires r/evolution. dbi333 is an Afro-Dub-Tryp band founded by queen-daughter of dub poetry d'bi.young anitafrika and Sudanese master musician Waleed Abdulhamid. The band features d'bi. on Vocals, Waleed on Guitar, Odel Johnson on Drums, Chris Butcher on Trombone and Patrick O'Reilly on Guitar. When d'bi. is joined by Waleed, Odel, Chris and Patrick, as a band, dbi333 creates a mesmerising new sound ala Lady Saw's Dancehall meets Skunk Anansie's punk rock while mellowing to the enchantment of Tracy Chapman, infused with the seductive poetics of Nina Simone. Afro-Dub-Tryp Stylee!
