RAY JESSEL MOTHER'S DAY SONGS FROM THE REDICULOUS TO THE ROMANTIC
PALM SPRINGS APRIL 13, 2012 - Michael Feinstein calls Ray "the millennium Noel Coward." And you'll agree, with songs like, "Life Sucks And Then You Die", and "Oxnard" the town named after an ox plus dozens of others, when Ray makes a rare desert appearance at The Arthur Newman Theatre in Palm Desert on Sunday, May 13th at 2 PM as part of the Life Is A Cabaret Sundays In Summer Series presented by Les Michaels.
Mr. Jessel was the last lyricist to work with Richard Rodgers and was co-composer and lyricist of the Broadway musical, Baker Street based on Sherlock Holmes. Such notables as Sammy Davis, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Durante, Richard Burton, Vikki Carr, Michael Feinstein, John Pizzarelli, Karen Akers and dozens of cabaret singers have recorded Jessel's songs, winning Ray and others numerous music awards including the coveted MAC Award.
Ray's other Broadway writing credits include," Hellzapoppin", and "I Remember Mama." On television, he wrote for "The Dean Martin Show," "The Carol Burnett Show," "The Love Boat" and many John Denver specials. Jessel was also writer/producer of the long-running series "Head of the Class." With his current partner Cynthia Thompson, Jessel wrote the song "Whatever Happened To Melody?" recorded by Michael Feinstein, on his CD "Forever" and has since been recorded by David Campbell on his CD "Yesterday Is Now", and by Masters Of Harmony on their CD, "California Gold Rush". Another recent Jessel/Thompson recording is their song "I'm All Right Now" on John Pizzarelli's CD "New Standards.
Ray's performance here last July caused a great deal of demand for him to return and as a result he will be the first show to open the 3rd season on Sunday, May 13th at the 2 PM show time. Doors will open at 1 PM and tickets will be on sale at the door for $10, cash only. The Arthur Newman Theatre is located in The Joslyn Center at 73-750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert, CA. 92260. Reservations are not needed but you may call 760-325-2731 for information.
