Housing Courts in LA: Humble Origins & Elegant Evolutions, 1900-1930
High-end bungalow courts represented the epitome of attractive and spacious multi-family housing in early twentieth-century Southern California. This dwelling type is often thought of as the invention of talented and progressive architects, but its design and development was also the logical extension and refinement of established housing patterns, and courts ran the gamut from haven to hovel. Architect Todd Gish, PhD, will set a historical context for this important architectural form, featuring a whole cast of characters in the burgeoning Los Angeles metropolis: a booming population of diverse consumers up and down the socio-economic ladder, as well as entrepreneurial land owners, creative designers and active social reformers. All six owner at the 1910 Gartz Court are opening their bungalows to us this evening.
Pasadena Museum of History's popular At Home series combines presentations by outstanding speakers with visits to architecturally unique homes. Enjoy one or more evenings of history, culture, food, and fun with fellow PMH members. All 2012 At Homes will be outside. In case of rain, please consider your reservation a donation.
