A Gathering of Radical Utopians
Local historian and writer Michele Zack will discuss some of the utopian visions in our area's past, including Pasadena's founding and original town plan. Utopians were responding to life and social conditions of the day, many including California-flavored ideas. Ms. Zack will focus mainly on Kate Crane Gartz's Altadena Salon, from the Progressive Era through the Depression, as a vortex where people from surrounding towns gathered to sort out the world's problems. A frequent salon guest, King Gillette, credited with the invention of the safety razor, was also the author of several utopian treatises. The program will take place at Gillette's Hunting Lodge (1890), one of the oldest homes in the San Gabriel Foothills.
Pasadena Museum of History's popular At Home series combines presentations by outstanding speakers with visits to architecturally unique homes. Enjoy one or more evenings of history, culture, food, and fun with fellow PMH members. All 2012 programs take place outdoors. In case of rain, please consider your reservation a donation.
Reservations are limited to PMH members only. If you are interested in becoming a member, please call 626.577.1660 or email membership@pasadenahistory.org.
