Cinco de Mayhem!
You've heard of Cinco de Mayo, right? It's a date to celebrate Mexican heritage and pride! It's also the date for the final home bout of the sixth Naptown Roller Girls season. For "Cinco de Mayhem," the Tornado Sirens welcome a North Central region foe in from the great white North -- the Minnesota Roller Girls All-Stars. Minnesota emerged as the #2 seed from the "Monumental Mayhem" Women's Flat Track Derby Association Big Five regional tournament last fall here in Indianapolis (Naptown was the #3 Seed). The Sirens last faced this tough team on their home turf last April, which was notably their most exciting bout of the season. The Sirens fell during the last minutes of the game. This is the rematch we've been waiting for all season! Leave the tequila at home and head out to the Pepsi Coliseum for what will be a "muy bien" bout!
The Tornado Sirens, along with the Warning Belles and Naptown's Third Alarm are all competing teams for Indianapolis' own Naptown Roller Girls. NRG is a group of awesome gals from Indianapolis, Indiana who want to do one thing: SKATE.
Our fast and fabulous ladies have collected bruises, torn tendons, dislocated ankles and broken bones to bring roller derby to the Indianapolis area. We've been dedicated to skating, practicing, falling on our asses and getting back up to bring you action-packed bouts. For more information, head to www.naptownrollergirls.com.
What is roller derby?
Roller derby consists of two teams of five skaters each on the track. Each team has one scoring player called a jammer, who starts at the back and wears a star on her helmet. The rest of the skaters are called blockers, and they form a pack. The blockers get a head start on the jammers when the first whistle is blown; the jammers start sprinting at the sound of the second whistle. The jammers have to get through the pack and back around another lap before they can start scoring. On their second and future trips through, they get a point for every opponent they pass. Everyone else tries to stop the other teams' jammer from passing while helping their own jammer through. The team with the most points at the end of the bout wins.
What this means for you? Fun, action and excitement!
