The Adaptations Lab: June 15 - 17
Summer Viewpoints Training & Collaboration with Donnie Mather presented by The Adaptations Project
JUNE 15, 16, 17
Details: THE ADAPTATIONS LAB is an ongoing workshop series designed for performers of various disciplines to come together in a laboratory of training, collaboration, and exchange. The primary focus of this Adaptations Lab will be Viewpoints Training and the use of Music as the source material for generating work. Performers with a working knowledge of Viewpoints are highly encouraged to apply.
Viewpoints technique was first articulated by Choreographer Mary Overlie and later adapted for the stage by Director Anne Bogart and members of the SITI Company. The Viewpoints Training addresses issues of Time and Space through highly structured exercises and open improvisation. Performers expand their awareness through a unique physical vocabulary exploring the limits of theatre, movement, and music.
DONNIE MATHER has over 16 years experience with Viewpoints. He has trained with Mary Overlie, Tina Landau, Anne Bogart, and SITI Company (Associate Artist 2001-2007). Currently, he teaches at the Atlantic Theatre School and the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Art. Mather has also taught at Columbia University, NYU, The New School, Marymount, Fordham, Long Island University, Bard College, Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center, Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, Hope College, Louisiana State University, University of Puerto Rico, Manizales Theatre Festival of Colombia, Casa del Teatro (Bogota), Iberoamericano Theatre Festival of Bogota, Cia dos Atores (Brazil), University of Florianopolis, University of Uberlandia, Sao Paulo, and more recently at Subita Company (Curitiba). In 2009, Mather was the keynote speaker on Viewpoints Training at a conference at the University of Rio de Janeiro. This summer Mather will be a guest instructor at ChoreLAB hosted by Marymount Manhattan Dance along with John Jasperse, David Neumann, Helen Pickett, and Tami Stronach.
THE ADAPTATIONS PROJECT creates a theatrical body of work based on unusual source material by an ever-growing roster of Associate Artists. Founded by Donnie Mather, The Adaptations Project adapts New Forms of storytelling to create New Works for a New Century.
Last year, The Adaptations Project produced its inaugural production "Kaddish (or The Key in the Window)" a multi-media memory play based on the poem by Allen Ginsberg, directed by Kim Weild and performed by Mather. In the coming year, The Adaptations Project will produce "Rising A Dance Play" an ensemble dance/theatre piece based on the music of Yoko Ono conceived and staged by Mather.
