TeXtURE World Premiere
Choreography and Direction: Daniel Wilkins
DASSdancers: Brittany Falso, Bojohn Diciple, Elise Landles, Dade Glaser, Anthony Gamroth, Jasmine Wright

TeXtURE is Artistic Director Daniel Wilkins' answer to the Seinfeld concept. The novel idea that there is no idea. Wilkins entered the studio desiring to liberate himself from an overriding concept and follow his instincts. At the genesis of his career Wilkins said he would always create something that had meaning. But meaning has to be understood and digested by the viewer. Dance has a unique ephemeral quality and meaning can be most intellectually stimulating by seeking it in the puzzle of the movement itself. Wilkins was almost immediately gratified by how much emotional narrative and concept he was finding and revealing through the natural process with his dancers. In speaking with one of the DASSdancers he said "I am interested in you as an imperfect human and a dancer." Through relationships between the dancers and discovering how they expose themselves through body language, ideas naturally populated.
Movement can so easily be equated to painting. In a painting, there has to be dimension, texture, to take the eye and the mind to focus on subjects and to eloquently reveal emotion and thought. Adding to the dimension will be the incorporation of the dancers dialogue. Though it has been done for years in Broadway and Opera, it is a challenge to adapt it to concert dance. "Moments" were created that depict emotional settings between two people that almost everyone can relate to. The challenge is to weave voice with dancing and make it a cognitive success.
Wilkins will also take the concept of texture to the theatrical setting. He will be making unique lighting fixtures to create unexpected settings and physical dimension in the environment.
Texture aspires to move you at an instinctual level as well as excite you with the incredible feats of the highly athletic and beautiful All-Terrain DASSdancers.
