DisOrient 2012 Opening Night Film
Drama, Romance, Comedy (109 min.) Director: Minh Duc Nguyen Film Website http://www.touchthemovie.com English / Vietnamese (with English subtitles) Starring: Porter Lynn, John Ruby, Long Nguyen, Melinda Bennet
First time writer/director Nguyen tells a touching and offbeat tale of auto mechanic Brendan (Ruby) who regularly attends the VIP nail salon to get his nails done by manicurist Tam (Lynn) , a Vietnamese-American who's just as much a couples therapist as manicurist.
Both have dramatic back stories, he with his faltering marriage, she with her immigrant invalid father. As love blossoms, it's not in ways you can predict or expect.
More than a romantic story, this movie is about feel, about touch. From manicures (oh, those close-ups of the crazy things women do their fingers and toes) to Brendan and his wife in bed, to Tam bathing her father, and even something as simple as fingertips stroking an arm, Nguyen pulls his camera (shot with the RED system)in close, creating a stimulating, yet soothing sensuality you won't forget.
Reception following at the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art with a live performance by Craig Chee and his Band.
