Dangerous Beauty- Cosmetics in the Victorian Era, an Illustrated lecture with Alexis Karl
Date: Thursday, December 3rd Time: 8pm Admission: $8 Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215 Brooklyn NY
Enameled skin, toxic crimson blushes, and mercury-laden eyelashes. These are but a few of the deadly methods used in the Victorian woman's search for ideal beauty. This illustrated talk will follow the often shocking preparations at the toilette, guided by Victorian beauty writers of the time, and explore how the artifice influenced great artists of the era. Non-toxic versions of specific powders, fragrances and cosmetic concoctions will be created for the occasion for guests to experience. Alexis Karl is a multimedia artist and perfumer who lectures regularly on the cultural relevance of fragrance at the Metropolitan Museum, teaches "The Art of Perfume" at School of Visual Arts, and has held talks on fragrance and art at the Guggenheim Museum and NYU. Ms. Karl is the perfumer and founder of Scent By Alexis, an artisanal fragrance line based on art and literature, and is a perfumer and co-owner of House of Cherry Bomb fragrance line. In addition to fragrance, Karl is an exhibiting multimedia artist and performer of gothic music. Her dark music projects, Ondyne's Demise and Anima Animus Animal, are represented by Onyudo Records and employ film, dance, aerial and fire spinning along with scent diffusions in live performances. Karl has exhibited and performed internationally and in the States, most notable performances at the Whitney Biennial, Guggenheim Museum and 17th. Century Trinity Church in Manchester, UK.
