Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Co. presents From Here to Seattle
The concert includes two major Anne-Marie Mulgrew and Dancers Co. (AMM & DCO) danceworks Dig, a premiere and Project 2012, a restaging of the 1997 version that made its international premiere at the fFIDA Festival, Toronto Canada. Dig, Ms. Mulgrew's newest choreographic creation in collaboration with local filmmaker Carmella Vassor-Johnson, explores family history and roots. Set to an eclectic sound score of music, text, sounds and assorted songs, Dig tackles universal themes of hope, isolation and memories. Project 2012 is a collaboration featuring Peter Price's original electronic score, Vida-Vida's minimal video projection and Ms. Mulgrew's stark and physically demanding choreography for three dancers. The work was inspired by the Mayan Calendar and the rise of technology and its effect on humanity. Joining Ms. Mulgrew in these works will be Joseph Cicala, Leslie Ann Pike, Kate Rast, Megan Wilson and surprise guests. Critics applauded AMM & DCO's work "as ever-full of striking visual imagery and whimsy." (The Philadelphia Inquirer)
From Seattle, former AMM & DCO dancer, Deborah Birrane (founder of Deborah Birrane Dance) makes a much-anticipated return to Philadelphia performing in two solo works. Waking Dreams choreographed by John M. Wilson is a journey from hope to despair and from denial to acceptance. The Raven, choreographed by Eva Stone, is a somatically hip version of Edgar Allen Poe's The Raven, as told by Lord Buckley. Ms. Birrane has had a varied and notable career as a dancer, director, choreographer, and teacher. Her performances and work have been embraced by audiences in the US and abroad. Ms. Birrane's last appearance with AMM & DCO was in Project 2012. Ms. Mulgrew notes. "It is joy to have Deb back in Philadelphia performing with us as a guest solo artist.
