The Wiyos at Last Licks Cafe: Saturday, March 29th
We at Last Licks have been waiting for this date since the Wiyos show at our venue last year ended. The Wiyos are a fantastically entertaining string band from Brooklyn New York. They may be world class musicians, but they never forget that people like to be entertained. This is music any and everyone will enjoy, we look forward to seeing you at this show!

Here are a few press quotes for the band:
The Wiyos blew my musical mind. Think of the [Asylum Street] Spankers crossed with vaudeville performers, plus a dash of Reverend Gary Davis and Skip James thrown in for good measure. The trio has developed a sound and performance reminiscent of the early '20s and '30s with a completely contemporary feel. At times as I listened to this talented trio I swear I was watching them in black and white. From covering songs by Louis Armstrong, the Memphis Jug Band, Blind Boy Fuller, the Washboard Wonders (and many others) to creating their own unique originals, the Wiyos are bringing an almost lost generation of music into a new era complete with old-time souls to truly expand anyone's musical experience."
-Steve Sloan, Folk Wax/ Blues Wax September 2004
"Oldturnative Tunes" is the sub-title of this delightfully eccentric passel of music, bubbling up from the medicine shows of the '20s and '30s -- a somewhat more urban twist of the "O Brother" era but nonetheless smacking of that period's diffused genres. A lot of recorded music these days comes essentially from studio bands or maybe a duo or trio with studio players in a support role; not so here! The Wiyos are what you hear are what you get, and their live performance calendar looks like Ernest Tubb's did when Smiley Wilson and Haze Jones both stayed on the phone to make sure ET didn't have any down days on the road. This is interesting, fun music -- at no point does the music drift from its original purpose. I really get excited about off-the-wall music that thumbs its nose at generic conventions, and this thumbing is as jubilant as we've seen."
