SwitchBlade: An Eastside Story
The AZTLAN Dance Company presents "SwitchBlade: An Eastside Story," an original dance performance that shares dynamic, moving stories about Eastside barrio life, the creative resource from which AZTLAN draws cultural inspiration.
Program Description: Who we are is a product of where we come from. In AZTLAN's production of "Switchblade: An Eastside Story," contemporary eastside barrio life takes center stage where dancers narrate the languages and cultural code-switching that Chicano's engage daily to navigate the dual, and often conflicting, worlds of Latino and mainstream culture. Under the shadow of downtown high-rise buildings and on the horizon of a bustling downtown, Austin's Chicano culture resists dislocation from its historical roots in East Austin and strives to maintain its identity and visibility. Family, friendship, and love prove to be the unyielding refuge for a community misunderstood. The larger than life characters of Vatos, Cholas, and Chucos employ their body as visual, moving marquees of resistance and independence. They boldly assert and celebrate their unique role in society by embodying difference. It is through dance that AZTLAN offers deep insight about barrio life and the important experiences that have shaped community. Orale!
