Sherlock Holmes has captured the public imagination for nearly 130 years and is arguably the most popular fictional character of all time. Why? Find out in a rousing discussion between two Stanford alums - Hollywood producer/lawyer Shelley Surpin and HarperCollins' new author Bonnie MacBird.
The HarperCollins UK office had been looking for an authentic Conan Doyle voice for a long time, and were surprised, they said, to find it from a woman from California.
ART IN THE BLOOD is a traditional style novel about Sherlock Holmes, set in 1888 - a rousing adventure that pits him against a murderous villain, a rival detective, and his own brother Mycroft - in a case that takes him from London to Paris and the snowy wilds of Lancashire, testing his artistic nature and his friendship with Watson to the limits.
MacBird has had a long career in Hollywood. She started as a studio development exec at Universal, worked for many years a screenwriter (Tron), ran a production company for ten years winning three Emmys, has acted in classical theatre, and teaches screenwriting at UCLA Extension. ART IN THE BLOOD is her first novel, and she's at work on the second in a series.
She'll be interviewed by Shelley Surpin, a fellow board member, producer of SOUND OF MY VOICE and JAKE SQUARED, among others, and partner in Surpin and Mayersohn.
They'll talk writing process, the Great Detective, publishing, and there will be a short reading, Q and A, champagne and snacks.
ART IN THE BLOOD, released this fall, has received an enthusiastic response from both die-hard Sherlockians as well as regular readers and the mainstream press.
The book will be available for purchase and signing.
