HEIRLOOM FOOD AND STORY: A Farm and Field to Table Dinner honoring Hunting and Gathering Cultures

This Fall Story Dinner is the second in the HEIRLOOM FOOD AND STORY SERIES, offered over four seasons, which rekindles sharing our cultural legacies around a family-style dinner table, deepening our connection to land, story, heritage and each other.
Farm and field-to-table chefs, Deborah Littlebird, Helen Chantler and Marc Choyt have created a savory five-course harvest menu of fresh game, wild forage and seasonal heirloom fruits and vegetables. This intimate slow story evening features master storyteller/traditional Pueblo hunter, Larry Littlebird (Laguna/Santo Domingo Pueblo) and guest storytellers as they share hunting sacred legacies and tales of foraging in our beloved New Mexico fields and mountains.

ABOUT THE CHEFS AND STORYTELLERS DEBORAH LITTLEBIRD is Executive Director/Farm Manager at Hamaatsa where she co-facilitates retreats and programs with her husband Larry Littlebird. As a farm-to-table chef at Hamaatsa, Deborah creates artistic healthful gourmet meals inspired by Pueblo and Southwest Native cuisine. Her forthcoming cookbook, "Eat Good!" is about bringing back the sacred in the way we grow, eat and share our food. In her twenties, Deborah worked on her family's farm and greenhouse business where she gained invaluable tools for growing heirloom vegetables, fruit trees, herbs and flowers and had a small catering business. Before moving to New Mexico 25 years ago, she was educated at Kendall School of Design and worked as an art director/graphic designer for an award winning international design firm in Michigan. She is the mother of two gifted creative sons, Raine and Hunter who work in film, photography and music. www.hamaatsa.org
LARRY LITTLEBIRD (Laguna/Santo Domingo Pueblo) is a strong Native voice in his multi-faceted work as a master storyteller, filmmaker, artist, author and activist. His breadth of experience spans five decades. He played the lead role in the feature motion picture, House Made of Dawn based on N. Scott Momaday's Pulitzer Prize winning novel and founded the performing arts storytelling troupe, Coyote Gathers His People, which toured nationally. Littlebird is the author of Hunting Sacred-Everything Listens, a book of poetry and memoir and his signature experiential "Learning to Listen" programs have impacted people's lives, globally, nationally and locally. His legacy continues on the lands of Hamaatsa, an indigenous continuum-story gathering place and sustainable farm he co-founded with his wife Deborah, where he celebrates an indigenous holistic way of life. HELEN CHANTLER is CEO and lead designer of Reflective Images, Inc. As a business owner and jeweler her focus' is on handmade designer jewelry that is as ethically sourced as possible. This is the same principle she applies to her cooking. MARC CHOYT is President of Reflective Images Jewelry, the first Fairtrade Gold Jewelry in the US. He works as the commercial liaison with Fairtrade International to bring Fairtrade Gold into the US market. Marc is also a local activist, writer and storyteller. He co-lead a successful campaign to stop the gold mine in the Ortiz and is currently working to create an alliance to protect the Northern Galisteo Basin. He also serves as an officer on the board of Santa Fe's Green Chamber of Commerce. Marc has been on over forty elk hunts and leads others on hunting trips with an emphasis on sacred hunting. All Proceeds Benefit Tano Farm at Hamaatsa The Heirloom Food and Stories Series is a Benefit Fundraiser for Tano Farm at Hamaatsa, an indigenous continuum and off grid sustainable living farm located on 320 acres of pristine environmentally protected lands, south of Santa Fe. Once homelands to the Puebloan People, their mission addresses critical issues of food insecurity, diabetes and obesity in Indian country and other food deserts in underserved communities in New Mexico.
