Excess Flesh
Jill is obsessed with her new roommate Jennifer, a promiscuous and sexy hotshot in the LA Fashion scene. New to the city and recently single, Jill is unable to keep up as she binges and purges to stay thin; eventually hating herself and everyone around her. Her jealousy and rage spiral out of control -- Jennifer has everything, and Jill wants to be just like her. If Jill can't BE Jennifer, she must destroy her. Patrick Kennelly's debut feature continues his preoccupations with cultural collage and the deconstruction of genre as a strategy to represent knotty issues of social, personal and cultural identity. EXCESS FLESH blends together psycho thrillers, Lifetime *issues* movies, sitcoms and splatter films to evoke a fever dream about the nightmare of self in the modern world - and the social and cultural influences that shape that. Choosing the dream-making factory of the world, Los Angeles, as their setting, the writers burrow beneath the sunny facade to uncover the brittle reality and loneliness that make up its DNA.
The same writing, directing, producing and scoring team previously collaborated on the award-winning multi-platform pop musical project PATTY, which used the real-life stories and myths surrounding cultural icons, Patty Duke and Patty Hearst, to examine female identity, body, celebrity, cults, mental illness, and faith. Vis-a-vis a more intimate and claustrophobic PoP genre storytelling, EXCESS FLESH continues many of these very same explorations.
