Jen and the Gents
Jen and the Gents play upbeat, quirky, honest pop-tinged music which has never failed to win over audiences at their gigs. Their sound is based around the engaging vocal delivery and skillful songwriting of Jen Ewan, valuing memorable choruses, vocal harmonies and danceable rhythms rather than guitar pyrotechnics.
The band were formed when Jen (vocals, guitar) introduced her songs to Stuart "Pockets" Crout (drums, backing vocals) and Martin Beer (bass) when they had a regular acoustic session at Edinburgh's much-missed Susies Diner as part an earlier band. When Susies closed and the sessions stopped, the three saw the potential of Jen's songs and formed a new band to play them. More recently the band have added lead guitarist Lewis Scott Diamond, after being impressed by his ability to sensitively augment their sound. The sound of Jen and the Gents has been honed by gigging at Edinburgh venues such as Studio 24, Henry's Cellar Bar and Bannermans, festivals including Eden and Knockengorroch and by performing on the street during the Edinburgh festival Fringe. Street performing has been an important influence on the sound of the band, as it provides a testing ground where only the strongest, most captivating songs and arrangements will succeed. The band released a self-titled EP in spring 2011, and are currently working on new material for a single release, scheduled for spring 2012.
