Ken Vandermark & Paal Nilssen-Love Duo
Vandermark & Nilssen Love Duo latest album, "Dual Pleasure 2" Published on 09-01-07 by The Wire Writing credit: Andy Hamilton Although Vandermark; powerhouse saxophonist and leader of the Chicago musical avant garde, has shown an interest in more restrained areas, this double album with Oslo drummer Nilssen-Love will satisfy fans of his full throttle outbursts. The first disc is a studio recording, the second live, both from Oslo, and Vandermark also plays B flat and bass clarinets. On 'Train Hits The Station" and 'Never Leave Well Enough Alone", and on much of the second CD, the playing is in the Coltrane/Elvin Jones lineage- Vandermark's impassioned tenor has an almost religious fervour; his tone heavily vocalised. A thoroughly dual pleasure.
Support tonight from;
Mid Leopard Violet Prism.... Ruaraidh Sanachan and Stuart Arnot in overloaded electric mode, wresting demons from the wires and threatening the sky. Reverb-heavy guitar lead circles above a static, fluttering organ. A mixer feeds solemnly back to the scorched earth. Heathens seek redemption in ritual.
Polar Bears Are Best No One Else Can Beat Them!.... A trio free improvising bass heavy bottom enders.... Howie Reeve on bass, Fritz Welch on bass drum, and Armin Sturm on double bass.
