Belva Davis Looks Back: Never in My Wildest Dreams
Berkeley's Belva Davis (Berkeley High '51) was a laundress' daughter. She grew up to be the first African-American TV newswoman on the West Coast. She started as a clerk, became a radio reporter, endured harsh racism (she didn't get a TV job because the station "didn't hire negresses"), rose to be a prize-winning TV journalist and one of the Bay Area's most familiar and trusted reporters. Along the way she interviewed people ranging from Muhammad Ali to Fidel Castro to Nancy Reagan, yet never lost sight of her responsibility to also tell the stories of people others ignored. Her 40-year career is a combination of struggle and overcoming, and an education in her era.
