The University of California Alumni Chorus invites you to "A Royal Banquet" featuring the music of Kings: David, Solomon, Babylon's Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, Jesus, and Henry the VIII. Texts and music used as early as 973 A.D. for the coronation of King Edgar will be included. The main course of the evening will be Belshazzar's Feast by William Walton, one of the most exciting pieces of music written in the last 100 years. Conducted by Dr. Mark Sumner, Director of the UC Choral Ensembles, the concert will feature massed choirs, baritone soloist, full orchestra, and guest artists, the singers of the select CAl student ensemble, Perfect Fifth. Walton's hugely popular Crown Imperial March will frame the occasion, which will also showcase Handel's Zadok the Priest, sung at every British coronation since George II in 1727. Similar in tone to Belshazzar's handwriting on the wall, Saul's conversion came from a bright light from heaven, wonderfully depicted in Egil Hovland's mini-masterpiece, Saul. A second performance of both Walton pieces will be reprised at the historic First Unitarian Universalist Church at Geary and Franklin in San Francisco, at a special service on Sunday, December 13th at 11:00.
