Miriam Beerman: Expressing the Chaos @ SLIFF
Miriam Beerman: Expressing the Chaos Jonathan Gruber, U.S, 2015, 53 min. Sunday, Nov. 15, 3:30 p.m., Webster U./Moore Miriam Beerman is a survivor, and this documentary on her life and work provides a memorable profile of an artist who has elevated her empathy for the plight of the world's castoffs into powerful portrayals of dignity. In her more than 60 years as a groundbreaking artist, Miriam has overcome personal tragedy to inspire friends, family, peers, patrons, and students. Struggling with her artistic demons, Miriam has created haunting images that evoke the suffering of generations of victims, bravely exploring such dark subjects as biblical plagues, the Holocaust, Hiroshima, and nuclear threat. At 91 years old, she now lives in a residence home near her family in Washington, D.C. Although her memory is fading, Miriam continues to generate compelling and forceful work. Her art, in fact, is one of the only things of which she remains absolutely sure. Shown with The Many Sad Fates of Mr. Toledano (Joshua Seftel, U.S., 2015, 26 min.): Using DNA tests, fortune tellers, and a prosthetic makeup artist, photographer Phil Toledano captures the many dark possibilities that might await him as he ages.
