Landfill Harmonic @ SLIFF
Landfill Harmonic Brad Allgood & Graham Townsley, U.S./Paraguay/Norway/Brazil, 2015, 84 min. Saturday, Nov. 14, 6 p.m., KDHX SXSW Audience Award-winner "Landfill Harmonic" traces the surprising path to fame of the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, whose members are drawn from a Paraguayan group of kids who live next to one of South America's largest landfills. This unlikely orchestra plays music from instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight, and with the guidance of their founder and music director, they navigate a new world of arenas and sold-out concerts, including a dream gig with the heavy-metal band Megadeth. But the daily lives of the children and their families remain difficult, and when a natural disaster devastates their community, the orchestra provides a much-needed source of hope for the struggling makeshift town. "Landfill Harmonic" serves as an inspiring testament to the transformative power of music and the resilience of the human spirit. Sponsored by Movie Friends of the Ethical Society of St. Louis
