Lookie Lookie is devoted to Latin Bugalu (or boogaloo), a short-lived period in the late 60s, when infectuous Latin-soul crossover music was created by Puertoriqueños like Ricardo Ray, Joe Cuba and Pete Rodriguez.
Lookie Lookie combines veterans of Boston's Latin, rock, ska and jazz scenes in an eight piece band, heavy on the percussion and horns, overflowing with joyful singing.
The setting: a loft party at Accurate Records, the tiny Somerville label which launched the careers of Morphine, Medeski Martin & Wood and many others.
Founded by bassist Chris Maclachlan of the great Boston punk band Human Sexual Response, Lookie's rhythm section is anchored by "El Alcalde" Vicente Lebron, Dominican master conguero and regular member of the Either/Orchestra and the equally legendary Club D'Elf. Lebron is joined by Rick Barry of Bim Skala Bim on timbales, Jorge Arce - the granddaddy of Boston's Puertorican musicians - on bongos and vocals, and Ken Winokur of silent film acccompanists The Alloy Orchestra on percussion.
Lookie's three piece horn section is led by Grammy nominated arranger and leader of the Either/Orchestra Russ Gershon on tenor sax, the debonaire Scott Getchell on trumpet and the fantastic Ted DeColo on alto sax.
