May Day! May Day! : Celebrating New Seattle Music
In their former "marathon format," the first two May Day! May Day!" concerts were richly embarrassing surveys of Seattle's contemporary music scene. For our third annual event, we've sharpened the focus toward longer, more ambitious sets from three extraordinary local artists/ensembles who left a big impression on our audience: iconoclastic upstart composer/pianist Aaron Otheim, local heavyweights Seattle Chamber Players, and Seattle Modern Orchestra, which launched at the 2010 edition of Mayday!. Curator Paul Taub once again has charged the artists to touch themes of politics, pagan rituals, and calls for help in times of distressand the result is an exciting program: the world premiere of Bones, composed by Otheim and performed with the Skeletons; John Cage's Thirteen, performed by the Seattle Modern Orchestra (Julia Tai, artistic director), in honor of the composer's centennial; and SCP's spirited read of the iconic Coming Together/Attica by Frederic Rzewski. Presented by Town Hall; program supported by the Aaron Copland Fund and Paul G. Allen Family Foundation.
