Imagine yourself in Delphi, Greece. Suddenly, the Oracle breaks into song. You turn around and there stands Cosy Sheridan, inspired to write a parody on aging, or a lyric of practical philosophy in a complicated world. Or maybe just an ode to romantic love. And she's singing it just for you. Her given name seems to suit her, for she is sublimely gifted at sharing the most intimate and moving moments in her peripatetic twenty year musical career (as singer-songwriter, teacher and co-founder of the Moab Folk Camp in Utah) with people who matter you, the audience. In 1992, she won the songwriting contests at both the Kerrville Folk Festival and The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. She has been touring, writing and recording ever since. Now your paths have crossed. Sit back, listen. Enjoy.
What people say about us is important, to be sure. So when someone whose business is music refers to Sloan Wainwright's voice as "warm and smokey and smooth; it makes her earthy, ominous lyrics seem all the more intense," people take note. Sloan has written numerous musical compositions for theater and dance, and teaches at many of the best-known master songwriter workshops. But perhaps the words that most clearly illuminate her work, her character and her impact on American musical styles, are the candid words spoken by Sloan herself. "I wrote my first song after hearing my brother's first song. And I thought to myself when I heard this song. I can do that. I want to do that. Shortly after I heard that song I just sat down at the piano in the TV room and wrote a song about my cat. So it sort of started like that. I think for all of us...we all want to be seen and we all want to be heard. And I feel very grateful that I'm heard. I am so grateful for the music...I am so grateful for music in my life. Music is what makes it possible for me to love my life as much as I do. And that's the truth."
