Looking + Drawing

This class will focus on developing the act and process of looking in order to cultivate awareness and skills through mark making. Lessons provided will cater to individual student experience levels. Fostering a firm grasp of seeing and drawing through structured exercises will help participants begin to draw with ease.

The portability of the sketchbook allows us to work in studio, museum galleries, and outside of museum walls. We will draw from still life, architecture, pictures, and possibly each other. Experimentation with materials and ideas is encouraged.

This 6 week series will meet Thursday evenings, October 15-November 19 from 6:30-8:30pm in the 2nd floor classroom at BIMA. As the art museum is closed at this time, please enter the building at the side door marked 100 Ravine Lane.

This course is taught by Bainbridge native Erik Peterson, who holds an MFA from American University. Erik has taught drawing, painting, and color theory at schools ranging from Pratt Fine Art Center in Seattle to the Maryland College of Art and Design.

Materials needed:
1 small sketchbook and 1 large sketchbook; paper quality should be heavy enough to endure erasing and toothy enough to hold a little charcoal.

BIMA will provide an array of drawing implements and erasers; instructor will provide additional materials for in-class experimentation.
