Grapefruit
In a darkly comic story of Sally Lambert's battles with the medical industrial complex, Cheryl King delivers a tour-de-force performance, embodying multiple characters, including the deadly Daddy Cancer.
Part etude, part indictment of the American health care system, Sally Lambert's Grapefruit is a lyrical ode to conscious self-care. We all have a healthy distrust of doctors, and this play deconstructs the medical system while buoying the spirit that rails against it.
In the summer of 2010, The play was originally selected by Cheryl King for her Women at Work Festival in Sept. of 2015. But Sally died before she could perform it. She left the play to Cheryl, who presented it in the 2011 Women at Work Festival, after which the play ran weekly at Stage Left Studio for more than two years. Ms. King has performed it intermittently since then. Cheryl King is currently touring the US, performing sketches, Shakespeare and solo work in Los Angeles and NYC.
REVIEWS
"Cheryl King, StageLeft's proprietress... reminds us that she's also a magnificent actress. Her performance is nuanced, constantly compelling, and ultimately very moving.' Martin Denton, nytheatre.com
"Grapefruit" written by Sally Lambert and performed by the talented and personable Cheryl King of "Stage Left Studio" is a triumphant journey into the mind of a cancer "patient" going through the pharmaceutical regime of prescribed treatments, all the while going on a personal voyage to unearth her true state of being/make sense of what is really happening to and around her. Not just a cancer story, it is a survival story that sheds light on something so looked over..." Kuale, Suburban Underground
