Dorian May Trio at WCT
Dorian May Trio to play at WCT
The elegant jazz piano of Dorian May will regale audiences at the Willits Community Theatre on Sunday, November 22, at 2 P.M. May will provide two separate takes on his expansive and articulate style. First he will open with the Dorian May Trio, featuring May on piano, his wife Dorothea May on standup bass, and Tom Rickard on drums. For this set the trio will explore musical landscapes already explored by the likes of jazz greats Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. In the second set May will present the Dorian May Little Big Band, a heptette featuring vocalists Sarah Ryan and Earl Oliver, saxophonist Sonny Cordell, trumpeter Walter Kimmelman, all supported by the lithe foundation provided by the trio. With the Dorian May Little Big Band, May has used his talents as an arranger and transcriber to whittle down various Big Band classics from the 1930s and 1940s into a delicious blend that can satisfy the most demanding jazz aficionado while eluding the economic reality that put the true Big Bands in the same boat with the dinosaurs and covered wagons so many years ago. May promises that his Little Big Band will perform trimmed up and modernized versions of such classics as "Slow Boat to China", "Mack the Knife," "I'm Beginning to see the Light," "Tuxedo Junction," "Stepping Out with My Baby" and "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?" The audience is encouraged to come to the concert dressed in 1940s styles. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased either in person at Mazahar, 38 South Main Street in Willits, online at Brownpapertickets.com or by telephone (24/7/365) by calling 1-800-838-3006. Get your tickets fast because this show is sure to sell out faster than a Bird solo.
