Whirling Dervishes of Konya in Toronto
FREE event, just make reservation.
The Whirling Dervishes of Konya are coming to Toronto! Join us for this very special ceremony as we experience the Sema ceremony with the semazens and musicians of the Mevlevi Order of Konya.
The Sema is a ritual of symbolism and remembrance that developed to carry the inspiration of the 13th century poet and mystic Hz. Mevlâna Jelâleddin-i Rûmi. From the dervish's garments to each of his movements, all bears meaning and is carried out with grace. Accompanied by music considered to be the pinnacle of Ottoman culture.
Recognized by UNESCO as a "Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity", the International Mevlana Foundation aims to preserve and make accessible the Sema and the works and ideas of scholar and poet Mevlâna Jelâleddin-i Rûmi.
We are delighted to be welcoming International Mevlana Foundation president Mr. Faruk Hemdem Çelebi (22nd grandson of Mevlana Rumi and the current Çelebi), and vice president Mrs. Esin Çelebi Bayru (22nd granddaughter of Mevlana Rumi) and the mutrip and semazens of the Mevlevi Order. Event is sponsored by the Respublic of Turkey Promotion Fund. They will be offering a performance in Toronto free to the public.
Space is limited and reservation is required.
More on reservation will be followed.
