Music from Boxwood: Featuring Chris Norman, David Greenberg and Shelley Phillips
Flutist Chris Norman and violinist David Greenberg have collaborated for decades. They play Celtic music from the 18th Century, which combines traditional and baroque works from Scotland and Ireland, many by way of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. The Duo's performances are beautiful, spirited, and intense. They are joined by Boxwood artist Shelley Phillips from Santa Cruz on harp, oboe and songs.
The ensemble will perform a home concert in North Berkeley off Solano Avenue. The program will cover many styles of music, including Cape Breton, Acadian, Irish, Scottish, French Canadian and Baroque.
Chris Norman - flutes, pipes, voice Hailed as one of the finest flute players of our time, Chris Norman proves over and over again that the simple wooden flute is the original - and still unsurpassed - woodwind of expression, passion, joy and subtlety. His influential work as a performer, composer, recording artist, teacher and flute maker has brought the simple wooden flute to the forefront as an alternative voice to the modern orchestral instrument.
David Greenberg - Cape Breton fiddle, baroque violin, octave violin Praised as both "one of the most impassioned folk-fiddlers you'll ever hear" (James Manishen, Winnipeg Free Press) and "the best baroque violin soloist in Canada, if not North America" (Stephen Pedersen, Halifax Mail-Star). This dual musical identity is not a newly acquired habit. During his schooling in classical violin playing (beginning at age 4), David also picked up traditional fiddling by ear from recordings.
