No. 049 Shitty Barn Session: Dietrich Gosser
Dietrich Gosser, a midwestern singer/songwriter with an ear for arrangement and instrumentation reminiscent of the junkyard clatter of Tom Waits and Joe Henry, is out in support of his just released Somewhere in the Night. On 2008's What the Buzzsaw Sings and its more austere 2010 followup The Man who Invented Gold, Dietrich Gosser began each song with one foot planted firmly in a dusty and forlorn folk tradition. A few of the songs even stayed there, but most, either willfully or haphazardly used their subtle dynamic arrangements and elusive lyrics to inhabit a more sweeping and romantic landscape with big lakes, long drives, political scandals, and imaginary radio stations rising from the cornfields. Clanging metals and endlessly sustaining cymbals resonate from quiet acoustic arrangements and dry accounts of family vacations, adolescent heartbreak and the intoxicating boredom of bank heists.
