Cairo In Kittery!
Dance Workshops & Performance
11-1p: "Sha'abi Chic"
Sha'abi, meaning "of the people" is a style of music and dance that developed in the working class neighborhoods of Cairo. Known as "street dancing," Sha'abi is based on belly dance movements but is more informal with a flirty and earthy style. In this workshop you will learn a choreography to "Morgeha" which is currently one of the most popular & famous Sha'abi songs in Cairo. Prepare to sweat and have fun while connecting to the pure feeling of Egyptian dance.
1-2p: Lunch & Shopping
Have lunch at one of our lovely downtown Kittery restaurants or peruse gorgeous designer costumes straight from Egypt.
2-4: "Egyptian Megeance"
A "Megeance' is what they call your opening/entrance piece in Cairo. This is the first time the audience sees you therefore your dancing should be exciting and dynamic. In this workshop you will learn choreography to an Egyptian entrance piece that is currently played on the stages of Cairo. It is a wonderful contemporary piece with a bit of Saidi, lots of shimmies and accents as well as veil work. Be inspired by the Egyptian style of dance that is Aleya's trademark! Please bring a veil.
8pm: Evening Performance featuring Aleya with Jeni, Rosa Noreen, Zabel, Selena, Origins Folkloric Dance Company, and a group performance by Jeni's Dance Hall Students with live music by Mitch Kaltsunas and band.
NOTE: These workshops will be Adv/Pro but all levels are welcome to attend.
