Classical Grass
From Mozart to Monroe, from Haydn to hoedowns, we've assembled a concert program that demonstrates just how versatile the mandolin can be. The Seattle Mandolin Orchestra will share the stage with two of the Northwest's hottest bluegrass bands, Northern Departure and the DownTown Mountain Boys. We'll bring the classics, they'll bring the grass and we'll see what happens when they meet. We'll also celebrate the release of our new CD, Coloratura.

The most exciting young bluegrass band to emerge from the Pacific Northwest in years, Northern Departure has delighted local audiences with their high energy and virtuosic playing. Last year, the group placed second in Seattle's annual Sound Off! competition, a showcase for under-21 talent sponsored by the Experience Music Project. The lone bluegrass act among a dozen pop, rock and hip-hop groups, Northern Departure won over the judges and their fellow contestants, shining the light of bluegrass into uncharted territory. They've also developed a following on the regional festival circuit, including a well-received showcase at the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2011 "Bluegrass Fan Fest" in Nashville.

Seattle's DownTown Mountain Boys are an accomplished band loaded with veteran bluegrass talent. Seen for years in such popular Northwest bands such as Ranch Romance, Rural Delivery, Brother's Keeper, Rainy Pass and Who's Driving?, these five musicians have come together in a match made in musical heaven. Take three-part harmonies that send shivers up your spine, add dazzling instrumental firepower, and you have the sound of the DownTown Mountain Boys.

Founded in 1968, the Seattle Mandolin Orchestra is dedicated to revitalizing America's mandolin ensemble tradition. Featuring the entire mandolin family of instruments, including mandolin, mandola, mandocello and mandobass, the group performs throughout the Seattle area. The Orchestra's new CD, Coloratura, will be for sale at the concert. It includes classical selections, Italian favorites and Renaissance art songs, featuring the captivating vocals of soprano soloist Julie Finch.
