The 2015/16 season of Arts Matter begins with Book of Negroes author, Lawrence Hill, coming to the Langley Fine Arts School. The evening will be a combination of Lawrence Hill inspired performances by the Langley Fine Arts School students, as well as a lecture about Arts and why they matter from Lawrence Hill.
Hill is the author of several books: The Book of Negroes (won the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, the Commonwealth Writers' Prize for Best Book and CBC Radio's Canada Reads), non-fiction Blood: the Stuff of Life (informed his 2013 Massey Lectures), and Dear Sir, I Intend to Burn Your Book: An Anatomy of a Book Burning. Hill co-wrote a six-part television miniseries based on The Book of Negroes. His fourth novel, The Illegal has recently been released. Lawrence Hill was greatly influenced by his parents' work in the human rights movement. Much of Hill's writing touches on issues of identity and belonging.
