Event
"Writing Ghosts, Revealing the Unknown" a creative Writing Workshop
Sunday April 1st, 11am 3pm Oakland, CA
Because of the great success of the March 3rd session, I've decided to offer "Writing Ghosts" again. It will be similar format, but pushing the questions further for those of you who took it the first time.
-------- Many of us experience the world having to fill in unknowns, absences or silences around our lives. We may have unknowns in our histories, our families, our lineages, or silences around things we have experienced. Do you have story you have been wanting or trying to tell? A memory you want to find a way to write down? Or an absence or silence you want to try to begin to express?
In this workshop, we will use creative writing exercises to pull out narratives located in our memories and our bodies. We will spend time reading a few other writers, discussing and writing our memories, our voices, our stories, and time focusing on our bodies as containers for memory that hold histories. This workshop will pay particular attention to the way race and culture impact how our histories and stories have been historically silenced or hidden from our knowledge. This is a great workshop for adoptees, fostercare alumni, undocumented or documented immigrants, people of color, or anyone who has a history or cultural lineage that has been interrupted by war, violence or poverty.
This workshop is for both experienced writers and those who have NO writing experience. We will work from "where you are" to explore your stories, thoughts and ideas. We will use different genre's for exploring how our memories are unearthed and absences are revealed including: poetry, journaling, memoir and nonfiction. When you leave the workshop, you will have 3-4 pieces of writing to develop. The workshop will also arm you with some tools to take home once you leave, to continue your process.
