18 Reasons Chicken 101: How to Have City Birds Tuesday, May 8th, 2012, 7-9PM $25 member/ $35 general admission
Join 18 Reasons and poultry expert Nick Rupiper for a workshop on how to keep chickens in the city!
In this class we will learn: An overview of rules & regulations keeping chickens in San Francisco How to pick the right flock How to build a coop The basic needs for chickens
At 32, Nick Rupiper has been raising chickens for about 6 years in Sonoma Valley. After getting four of them, the next week he got a dozen more. Then, a few weeks later he got 20 more. After a year, he got about 100 more. After a couple years he got 1000 more! He first started selling his eggs at a local bookstore in Sonoma then eventually supplying his eggs to restaurants such as Chez Panisse, Boulette's Larder, Bar Agricole, as well as to Bi Rite Market. In addition to raising chickens at his private zoo named Fowler Creek Farm he also raises heritage breed pigs and maintains a citrus and fig orchard. He may not having been raising chickens for a long time, but due to his infatuation and the amount of chickens, Rupiper has learned some valuable lessons that he enjoys sharing with anyone who will listen. He has yet to hear a good excuse why not to have a backyard flock.
