The Farm Series: Early Summer Inspiration
18 Reasons The Farm Series: Early Summer Inspiration Saturday June 30, 9AM-5PM, Ticketed $40 member price; $50 general admission Ticket price includes lunch, reimbursement for gas for those who drive and the opportunity to meet the amazing farmers that are changing our world
Yeehaw! 18 Reasons is hittin' the road this summer! In the first of our three part farm tour series with our trusty tour guide Simon Richards, the Head Farmer at Bi-Rite, we are visiting two incredibly inspirational farms: Mariquita Farm and Catalan Farm...
Andy Griffith from Mariquita Farms is a rebel farmer. Early in his career he worked for a large organic farm where he saw the beginnings of the industry's shift toward ever bigger and corporate practices. He broke away and started Mariquita, which he refers to as "beyond organic" -- using organic philosophies, but outside of the structure of organic certification. Andy is a champion of unique and heirloom varietals many of which we can't wait to check out!
It all started in 1994 when Maria Catalan immigrated from Mexico and worked as a farm worker. Eventually she struck out on her own and began one of the first Latina organic farmers and now runs Catalan Farm with her family. This family grows a huge variety of vegetables, many of which are expressions of the family's heritage, including corn, cabbage, squash, tomatillos, and pipicha (a lemony herb). Maria's trailblazing farm and her family are a great example of the American Dream realized, and a true inspiration to us.
**Lunch is provided by 18 Reasons and is included in the ticket price. We will facilitate carpooling to each farm and will reimburse drivers for the gas that they use.**
