We're in the Army Now: Fort Lewis Leads the Way to Sustainability
By any standards, Fort Lewis has ambitious and comprehensive sustainability goals. Among those goals are the following: Cycle all material use to achieve zero net waste by 2025; Sustain all activities on post using renewable energy sources and generate all electricity on post by 2025; and zero discharge of wastewaters to Puget Sound by 2025. Paul Steucke, Chief of Environmental and Natural Resources Division of Public Works at Fort Lewis will present how a complex and traditional organization chose meaningful, measurable goals to be achieved in 25 years. In addition, he will share steps Ft. Lewis has taken to achieve these goals.
Paul Steucke was appointed Chief of the Environmental and Natural Resources Division of Public Works at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1997. He has worked for the Army since 1986 as an Environmental Engineer at three different installations. In September 2000, the Fort Lewis Public Works became the first Army organization to be 3rd party certified to the ISO 14001 standards. A year later, in September 2001, Fort Lewis forests became the first and to date are the only public lands to be certified sustainable by the Forest Stewardship Council. Mr. Steucke has also contributed to the Governor's Sustainable Washington Advisory Panel as a member of the drafting committee.
