Modern Vaudeville (11-7)
With a wink to the past, Modern Vaudeville is a new comedy, variety, music and talk show experience featuring the Twin Cities' top performers. This month, comedian Tommy Ryman, comic-magician Nick Diffatte, rock 'n roll band BBGUN (Neal Perbix, Al Church and Jeremy Hanson), and David Harris will perform. The variety show is produced and hosted by Midwest Emmy Award Winning comedian/magician David Harris.
Comedian Tommy Ryman grew up with a New Age, folksinging mother and a traditional, Lutheran insurance-agent father. The XY equation equals: acclaimed comedian. Ryman has earned the title of Semifinalist on NBC's Last Comic Standing. Roseanne Barr, a professed fan, raves she has "never seen anything like [Tommy] before in [her] whole life, [he is] one-of-a-kind, fantastic!" Ryman's act can be described as absurdist and clever, masked behind a very likeable and innocent demeanor, often thought of as disturbingly adorable. He is regularly featured on Rooftop Comedy, SiriusXM, and iheartradio. Ryman has opened for Louie Anderson, Maria Bamford, and Nick Swardson. He was invited to perform at the prestigious Great American Comedy Festival at the Johnny Carson Theater, and was featured as one of the "Twin Cities' Funniest People" by Metro Magazine. Ryman is signed to StandUp! Records and assures audiences that his comedy album "Bath Time with Tommy Ryman" has a tasteful cover. Comic-magician Nick Diffatte will also grace the stage. At age 19, the unique style of dry humor and quick wit of Nick Diffatte has already brought him all over the country for more than 10 years, performing in variety shows, casinos, and private events. Nick has performed multiple times in Las Vegas, including appearances at the Suncoast, Sam's Town, Royal House, and the world famous Laugh Factory in the Tropicana.
Twin Cities rock 'n roll band BBGUN will round out the Modern Vaudeville bill. Longtime friends and musicians Neal Perbix and Al Church began the songwriting sessions with few intentions. But together, their collaboration took a new turn. BBGUN leans toward a sunny, poppy, alt-country vibe weaving lyrics both contemplative and playful and harmonies both sophisticated and singable. The pair's powerful songwriting connection found common themes within similar experiences growing up in small-town Minnesota, and those commonalities helped them tap into a carefree feeling. Complemented by Jeremy Hanson's expert, easy drumming, their rock 'n roll tunes sound best coming from the speakers of a pickup truck. In between drinking beers and swimming in the lake, the three crafted a debut album that the City Pages called "stunning." "The sound that eventually emerged was instantly inviting but diverse," critic Rob van Alstyne wrote. With an eye toward the carefree days of youth, BBGUN's debut album documents the anxiety and surprising joys of trading in late-night cigarettes for a kind of settling down.
David Harris is a Midwest Emmy Award-winning comedian/magician who entertains across the U.S. and Canada for corporate events, colleges, clubs, and theaters. A Twin Cities native, David has appeared to rave reviews on Minneapolis-St. Paul's ABC, CBS, and FOX TV. He has scored two Midwest Emmy's for co-producing and co-starring in the comedy TV show, "Nate On Drums," which appeared in 2005-06 on Minneapolis-St. Paul's KSTC.TV, Channel 45. David has also co-starred in several online award-winning videos and TV commercials. Plus, he's worked with some of the best in the business including comedy great Louie Anderson, Mary Lynn Rajskub, and Bobby Slayton.
