To What Strange Place: 78s Listening Session with Ian Nagoski, Music Researcher
Ian Nagoski is music researcher, musician, writer and record producer specializing in rare finds from international artists. In 2007, Ian released Black Mirror, a collection of gripping folk and devotional music recorded between 1918 and 1954 from more than 20 countries that was lauded by publications as diverse as the academic journal Ethnomusicology and Pitchfork. Nagoski followed Black Mirror with, among others, a collection from the under-recognized and brilliant 1920s Greek singer Marika Papagika and an LP of the mid-30s recordings of the Indian classical singer Abdul Karim Khan. In 2011, Nagoski released a 3CD set depicting the lives and work of Middle Eastern musicians in and around NYC titled To What Strange Place which Henry Rollins called, "One of the most worthwhile purchases you will make this year."
